VA – Time-Life Music – AM Gold 1973
Album Notes
This series started out in 1990 as Super Hits, with each issue having a cartoonish photo/drawing as cover art. There were 20 volumes in the original Super Hits series. In 1995, the series was renamed AM Gold. The first four volumes were reissued using the new series title and a modified version of the cover art work from SUD-05, but that was soon replaced with a second AM Gold cover design that featured a gold record. The Super Hits series used the SUD- prefix, while the AM Gold series used the AM1- prefix. In the late 1990s, the AM1- prefix was replaced with the R834- prefix, but the volumes continued as before. Two AM Gold budget box sets were introduced in the late 1990s, with 12 tracks instead of the usual 18-24. These were meant for retail sales, unlike the normal subscription CDs.
Time Life’s AM Gold series takes a wide-ranging look at the music that shaped the ’70s, sticking mainly to the biggest hits of each year and providing an hour-plus of first-rate oldies radio programming. Each disc is heavy with classic tracks from huge artists, but also finds space for one-offs from lesser-known groups and singers.
The year that saw the agony of United Stales troop involvement in Vietnam end-only to be replaced by the anguish of the Watergate scandal – also saw developments that affected the course of popular music. In 1973 for the first time, car radios were required by law to receive FM, and the first oil embargo drove up the price of vinyl.
The music itself was changing, with soul music receding in popularity. Stax still fielded occasional crossover hits with the Staples and Johnnie Taylor, but only Al Green Charted consistenly with the once-mighty Memphis sound. He reached the top 10twice in 1973, with “Call Me” (Come Back Home) and “Here I Am” (Come and Take Me).
Even Aretha Franklin was having trouble in the pop market until she clicked at year’s and with Stevie Wonder’s “Until You Come Back To Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do)….
